S had always wondered how Mello could put up with staying awake so late in to the night, she scrolled through her most recent case files, looking at the clock from time to time... 3:39am, 3:40am... 3:55am.

Beep!

She jumped a little, clicking the tab at the bottom of her page that lit up, accepting the video request. Pressing her coffee mug to her lips a gentle laugh was heard from her speakers. She glanced up at the screen, dull eyes brightening at the sight.

"Nice mug..." Mello laughed.
"Mello...~" A relieved sigh escaped her.
"Didn't think I'd show?"

She was silent for awhile, keeping her eyes locked on her webcam, locked on his eyes. Of course she doubted he would show himself... it had been years.

"You look tired." She noted, finally breaking the awkward silence between them.
"It's 4am, what did you expect?"
"I shouldn't have asked you for this...I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize, I... wanted to see you too."
"You did..?"
"Do I do anything I don't wanna do?"

He had a valid point there; S knew Mello was not the type to do things just because other people told him too. Back in the orphanage even, he walked to the beat of his own drum. S always admired that about him... She wished to be more like that herself, but she never let anyone get close enough to tell her to do anything, so it was kind of the same thing.

The two stared each other down in silence, it was unusual for both of them, to feel so awkward... Mello carried himself with confidence and S, she just didn't care what people thought, but the two of them here, now, together... it felt so strange, so right...~

"Go to bed Mello.."

S's voice brought Mello from his own thoughts, he could feel himself nodding off. Raising an eyebrow he stared at her more closely, she looked like she hadn't slept in days but showed no signs of crashing any time soon.

"What's that on your face?"
She glared, "what...?"
"Did you pierce your face?"
"Duh." She sat the cup down on her desk and stuck out her tongue playfully. She had both sides of her lip done, her cute little dimples, twice on her bridge and her septum.
"You look ridiculous." He blushed, finding her piercings maturing...
"Yeah well bite me."
Mello smirked, "have a good night S.~"
"You too Mel..."

"I love you Mello..." S's voice squeaked, glad it was over... it felt like a weight had been lifted off her chest. He was okay, and they seemed to be able to pick up their relationship just as they left it... She smiled, getting up and shuffling to her bed. It was 4am, about time she got rest.

"I love you too, S." Mello whispered, grinning to himself like an idiot as he turned off the mics and shut down his computer. He had wondered what it would feel like to hear her say that, and knowing she didn't know he was listening made it all the more special. Perhaps it was just a dream, but he knew he was happy..and that's all one could ask for at 4am...~

Ah well..those two... darlings don't have much of a relationship even to the point of death; but, knowing they both loved each other was enough for them.. now; and forever.
